Summer Comfort Foods
Ask any Anderson family member or relative about what comfort foods are and they will likely include some picnic item. The Andersons had a tradition of holding a fourth of July picnic each year. One year, Jimmy, now a doctor, recalls inviting his freshman girlfriend, Jessica, for the picnic. Jessica’s family was also close-knit, and her family used to have a summer picnic each year also. Friends of the family were always welcome to the picnic.
When Jessica arrived to the picnic, she was greeted warmly by all members of the Anderson family. She took a liking to great Grandpa Joe and great Grandma Sue since Jessica still had her great grandparents. They spent time talking about picnic favorites and comfort foods. Jessica especially liked the way everyone pitched in to look after the food on the grill. Her favorite was the barbeque chicken.
When she found out the time and effort that great Grandma Sue invested in the preparation of the chicken for the grill, it reminded her of her own great grandmother and how she would prepare chicken. To this day, Jessica would say that both barbeque chicken were similar because of the love and care that went to its preparation. Both bring fond memories of family gatherings to Jessica, and she would place the summer picnic barbeque chicken on her list of comfort foods.
